Your Retirement Account Isn't Your Retirement Plan

Your Retirement Account Isn’t Your Retirement Plan

A lot of people talk about their 401(k) or IRA like it is their retirement plan. It isn't. It's an account — a container that holds your money. A retirement plan is what tells that money what to do once you actually need it.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. An account can grow for thirty years and still leave you without answers to the questions that matter most the day you stop working.

What a Real Retirement Plan Actually Covers

A retirement plan isn't one decision — it's a set of decisions that all have to work together. Here's what it actually has to answer:

Income. Where does your monthly income actually come from once the paychecks stop — Social Security, a pension, guaranteed income from an annuity, savings you draw down? Each source behaves differently, and the order you tap them in changes how long your money lasts.

Market risk. If your retirement savings are sitting fully exposed to the market the year you retire, a bad downturn at the wrong time can do damage you never fully recover from. A plan asks how much of your money should be protected from that risk — not just growing, but protected.

Long-term care. Most people don't plan for this until they need it, which is exactly the wrong time. Can your plan absorb the cost of extended care without derailing everything else you've built?

Legacy. If you don't spend everything, where does it go — and how easily? The right tools can pass money to the people you care about efficiently; the wrong setup can tie it up in taxes and delays.

Taxes. Every choice you make about where your money sits and how you pull it out has a tax consequence. Tax-free doesn't happen by accident — it's the result of planning for it early.

Notice none of that is "which account should I open." That question comes after you know what job the money needs to do — not before.

A Plan Is Bigger Than Any One Account

When you look at everything above together, it's clear a real retirement plan isn't a single product or a single account — it's the whole picture, built around your actual life. The younger you are, the more general those answers can be. The closer you get to retirement, the more specific — and more urgent — they need to become.

At Compass Point, this is the conversation we have instead of just "where should you put your money." Together, we look at what you've already got, what it's actually built to do, and where the gaps are — before those gaps become expensive surprises.
